Björn Bracke (Kollektif landscape, Ghent)
22.1.2026, 19:00 Uhr Depot, Breite Gasse 3, 1070 Vienna

About the Lecture
In their lecture, kollektif will present how landscape architecture and urban design can function as active practices of care in response to contemporary socio-ecological challenges. Drawing from projects across different scales, they will discuss how attentive observation of local ecologies, species, material processes, and social dynamics forms the foundation of their design approach. The lecture will explore how simple, yet strong spatial interventions can enhance existing qualities, support ecological regeneration, and foster multispecies coexistence. kollektif will also reflect on co-creation as a key design tool, working collaboratively with communities, experts, and institutions to shape landscapes that are resilient, socially inclusive, and collectively sustained over time.

About the Speaker
Björn Bracke is a landscape architect – urban designer and co-founder of kollektif landscape. His work focuses on ecological transformation, multispecies landscapes, and the role of design in strengthening relationships between human and non-human communities. Through research-driven and collaborative design processes, Björn explores how landscape architecture can respond to environmental urgency while remaining socially grounded. Alongside professional practice, he is actively involved in research by pursuing his PhD at KU Leuven, teaching, and public debate, advocating for landscape architecture as a collective and ecological project that operates across scales and disciplines.
About the Office
kollektif is a landscape architecture and urban design practice based in Ghent, Belgium, working at the intersection of ecology, design, and collective action. The office views landscape as a powerful tool for positive change, capable of responding to contemporary socio-ecological challenges while fostering meaningful relationships among people, non-human life, and place.
kollektif approaches landscape architecture as a practice of care. Each project begins with close observation of what is already present: plant and animal species, ecological processes, material conditions, and everyday social dynamics. Rather than imposing formal solutions, the practice seeks to enhance existing qualities, support ecological regeneration, and work with landscapes as living, evolving systems. Simplicity and clarity of identity are central to their design approach, resulting in interventions that are robust, adaptable, and grounded in place. A key focus of kollektif’s work is more-than-human design. By strengthening local ecosystems and supporting multispecies coexistence, their projects aim to create landscapes that are both ecologically resilient and socially inclusive. Collaboration and co-creation play a central role, with projects developed in close dialogue with residents, experts, institutions, and public authorities to ensure long-term engagement and shared stewardship.
Their portfolio spans parks, public spaces, gardens, masterplans, and installations, and has been internationally recognised through awards and competitions. Driven by curiosity, engagement, and responsibility, kollektif positions landscape architecture as a regenerative, care-based practice shaping environments where all forms of life can thrive.
